Upcoming Events at MS & Parkinson's

Dear Whanau,
We have got a busy October planned with clinics, workshops and our first talk in our "Ask Me About" series.
Firstly, we wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone that helped with our annual appeal. We are immensely grateful for the incredible support you've shown to our cause. This is one of those things that we just can't do without your help. Thank you to the more than 350 volunteers that helped with the mammoth effort of collecting at the 43 sites all over Waitaha Canterbury.
We are super excited to let you know that we managed to collect $43,000!!
The annual appeal always highlights how one person can make a difference in the world. This is particularly emphasised by a few of our collectors in our rural communities where we don't have as many people volunteering.
In Amberley one couple, and their lovely dog, collected both days for us, and in Culverden one special person collected both days and managed to raise $1758!! Darfield is another rural community that comes together with the Malvern Lions and collects for us at the Postshop, bakery and supermarket. I don't think you can walk through Darfield during the appeal and not bump into a MSPC collector.
There are too many people to thank and mention, you are all important and we value your time and effort. Thank you to all our volunteers, service clubs and schools that helped us make this collection such a success!

Ask Me About Parkinson’s with Tim Anderson
|
Do you have a burning question? Or maybe something you have wanted to know about MS or Parkinson’s and never had the chance to ask? Or perhaps you are just curious about one tiny little facet of the condition or treatment? Now is your time to ask!
New to the MSPC events calendar are our Ask Me About series where we open the floor to your questions. These sessions will call for questions at time of registration, with Tim and Debbie choosing 10 to answer over the course of the hour session. We are anticipating these sessions will be booked out and encourage you to register early.

For anyone new to MSPC or if you haven't joined us before, then the Christmas lunch is a lovely time to get together and celebrate the year we've had. Papanui Club puts on an amazing spread of buffet style food and the desserts are to die for. There will be raffles and chocolate wheel so bring your gold coins.
For our regulars, you will notice an increase in cost this year. This is because the club is doing two buffet tables this year, meaning more people can attend, and the lines will move more quicky- win/win!

At the end of September I attended the Living Positively with Parkinson’s Conference in Auckland. During this three-day event we heard from keynote speakers, including world leading expert on Parkinson’s Professor Bas Bloem from the Netherlands, and Connie Carpenter-Phinney co-founder of the Davis Phinney Foundation.
There were many other presenters too, and I heard from an interesting and multi-disciplinary team of people that represented neurology, psychiatry, physiotherapy, nursing, and researchers that presented on a wide range of topics that included nutrition, mental health, dementia, genetic testing and the PINK 1 gene, intimacy and care giving. What a privilege it was for me to have this focused time of learning and be able to bring some of the current thinking back into my workplace to share with my colleagues and all the wonderful people that use our services and are part of our MSPC family.
I have had a few weeks to reflect on the conference now. I greatly enjoyed the learning from the expert presenters, but the other highlight was being at conference tables with all the people with Parkinsons and their caregivers. I learnt so much as we had a chance to chat over coffee and morning teas and discuss the real-life application of many of the topics being presented about. As always, I continue to be humbled as people share their stories with us.
The conference confirmed the leaning towards a Health and Wellbeing model to help people live well with Parkinsons today. I was excited to think that here at MS & Parkinson’s Canterbury we have already grasped this concept well and are running with it So, we continue to be here to support you with exercise, connect you with others through our peer support groups and provide education and tools to help you live well today.
